Southend on Sea Borough Council (UK)

Partner Description

Southend-on-Sea SOU is a United Kingdom borough council situated on the River Thames Estuary.  SOU is a single tier authority with 178,000 residents. SOU and the Essex County Council are close but facing different challenges will work together on training, education and prosumer propositions. SOU is interested in consumer engagement to accelerate the market and wants to explore technical options for future propositions. Grid overloading is a concern and SOU wants to explore how to make citizens (partially/fully) grid independent through demonstrators combining micro-CHP, solar, battery and grid rebalancing.

Role in EMPOWER2.0

Through Empower2.0 the goal is to develop mechanisms for individuals or groups of consumers to become more effectively and more profitably involved in energy provision. This requires consumer engagement and awareness of the possibilities for becoming a prosumer. Currently, consumers are generally not aware of the opportunities they have. Together with consumers, ‘prosumer propositions’ can be developed to set the energy transition in motion.
