Flemish “Green Deal for Shared Mobility” ends successfully
On the 3rd of June, this partnership was officially closed. The result is not perfect, but the marks are high! 106 participating signatories signed the deal with an engagement to undertake 742 concrete actions to achieve ambitious goals. At least 551 of these actions were reported as achieved.
To accelerate the growth of shared mobility, ambitious and SMART goals were set for every shared mobility mode and concerning the electrification of shared fleets.
The first goal was to increase the number of carsharing members from 28,000 to 80,000. In the beginning of 2021, Autodelen.net reported 82,000 car-sharers in Flanders.
The second ambition was to double the companies undertaking actions to support carpooling, from 1,000 to 2,000. The result of this goal is not known yet, as it depends on the results of a federal survey for companies that will be published after summer 2021, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic and its adverse impact on carpooling initiatives, it is unlikely that this target will be reached.
The third goal was to increase the number of bikesharing members from 197,000 in 2017 to 400,000 in 2021. Even after a decrease in 2020, the target was exceeded! There are approximately 450,000 bikesharing users in Flanders as of June 2021.
And finally, the partnership wanted to multiply the number of shared electric cars by a factor of 5. In 2017, there were only 40 shared electric cars. In January 2021, there were already 558 – an increase of a factor of 13.95!
In addition to these main goals, the Green Deal Shared Mobility in Flanders included a number of many small and bigger steps to make shared mobility mainstream. The organisations created a buzz among more than 100 organisations: (shared) mobility operators, public transport and environmental NGOs, research institutions, public authorities. They worked together on parking regulations, insurance issues, inspiration for cities and rural areas, business parks, energy questions. All together, the partnership undertook 551 individual actions, and they created new collaborations that will go on for many years to come.
