Pilot: Skill Mill
With the EU’s commitment to reducing greenhouse emissions, sustainable sources of energy have become the focus of many countries. Denmark has recently passed a law to cut emissions by 70% compared to 1990 levels. To reach this goal, there have been several developments with a particular focus on the offshore wind sector.
Vordingborg Municipality has taken advantage of this opportunity and has transformed a marina into a full-service port for two offshore wind farms. Noting these trends, Vordingborg Erhverv (VE) set out to find what local skills and competences would provide the right and necessary support for the sector.
The skills and competency analysis showed there was a major gap between the local competences and those required in the offshore sector. VE’s pilot project will seek to address this by contributing to the establishment of the first offshore training center on Zealand. This will not only serve the upskilling of local companies, but also become a training hub for the region for in regard to safety courses.
Despite the several months delay due to Covid-19, the project is again progressing at an acceptable pace. The location for the project has been determined to be the Port of Vordingborg. Two training partners have also been identified and are in the final stages of finalising their partnership agreement and course commencement activities.
Our next step is sending out invites to potential applicants for the project, with more project information, criteria for participation and how to apply. The pilot should be completed by either Q4 2020 or Q1 2021. The pilot structure has shifted from a one-off case study, to a proof of concept that is poised to continue in the long term. It also promises results that are transferable and can be implemented to regions that have similar issues to Vordingborg Municipality.
