Standards save time and money

Periscope partner GCE NODE held an event on standardisation, proving that standardisation contributes to increased efficiency in the Norwegian offshore industry.

Operating with various standards is inefficient and costly. By agreeing on international standards throughout the value chain, we could make our industry much more cost-efficient,” says Bjørn Berli.

He is a standardisation expert. For years, Berli has worked to build new standards in oil and gas. Berli currently heads the EG Z TI committee which is responsible for seven NORSOK Z TI (Technical Information) standards:

  • Z-001 Documentation for operation (DFO)
  • Z-CR-002 Component identification
  • Z-DP-002 Coding system
  • Z-003 Technical information flow requirements
  • Z-004 CAD symbol libraries
  • Z-005 2D CAD drawing standard
  • Z-018 Supplier’s documentation of equipment

EG Z TI has an expert group with members from Equinor, Aker Solutions, Aker BP, UiO, Lundin, ConocoPhillips and MHWirth.

Some parts of the oil and gas industry already agree on a standard. Other parts of the industry have project standards, company standards, national standards, industry standards and international standards.

“This is very costly. Norway is leading the way in standardisation, and where it is relevant, we work to convert NORSOK-standards to international standards. If we succeed, it could increase competitiveness for Norwegian suppliers and oil and gas industry,” says Berli.
