We make a difference by greening agriculture
Large parts of the North Sea Region is fertile land used for intensive farming with negative impacts on the climate and the environment. At the same time, farming is itself threatened by declining soil fertility, climate change, and energy and water shortages.
Our projects address the negatives and boost the positives of modern farming. They do this by promoting long-term productive, eco-friendly and climate-smart farming and food systems. As such they contribute to the European Farm to Fork strategy, a core part of the EU Green Deal.

Discover projects on sustainable farming
BEESPOKE: Raising crop pollination success BEESPOKE addresses the decline in pollinator numbers seen in the past decade. The project develops methods and capacities to increase levels of local, wild pollinators and crop pollination. |
CANAPE: Creating nature-based farm products CANAPE develops methods and markets for eco-friendly peatland farming called paludiculture. This involves sustainable harvest and use of wild plants growing in restored peatlands. |
Carbon Farming: Promoting climate-friendly agriculture The project explores farming practices that store more carbon. The partners also explore how this can be part of a sustainable farming economy. |
NuReDrain: Reducing the environmental impact of farm fertilisers NuReDrain has developed highly promising filter technologies capturing nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous from farm runoff water. |
PARTRIDGE: Raising farmland biodiversity In PARTRIDGE, farmers, hunters, and conservationists work together to increase biodiversity on arable lands by 30%. |
REFRAME: Bringing local food on the table REFRAME supported short food supply chains and small-scale farmers. The project successfully reframed food value chains to benefit local communities and the environment. |
SalFar: Promoting food security through saline farming In the face of growing salinisation of soils due to climate change, SalFar develops saline farming. Their successful trials with salt-tolerant crops will help protect food security in the future. |
SMARTGREEN: Greening regional greenhouse production Growing fruit, vegetables, and flowers in greenhouses requires lots of energy. SMARTGREEN works to make greenhouse production smart and energy-efficient.
SOILCOM: Revitalising soils through quality compost SOILCOM promotes turning waste into wealth by composting biowaste and using it to keep soils healthy. Quality compost restores the soil's natural resilience and ecosystem services. |
TOPSOIL: Coping with spells of dry weather TOPSOIL's advanced soil mapping methods help predict and manage problems caused by climate change, such as more frequent and severe droughts. |
