Counting the votes!

05 April 2018 - Published by Renske Stumpel
Innovation in the election's backoffice process in Groningen. On 21st of March 2018 a referendum was held in Groningen Municipality. With the help of blockchain technology the votes were being counted.

Blockchain technology

Groningen is experimentingwith this technology. This particular pilot concerns a small part of the election process: the actual counting of votes in a specific polling station (the turnout rate).

What is this technology about (on Youtube one can find lots of video's explaining) but here a real short one:

"The blockchain is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value.” Citation of Don & Alex Tapscott, authors Blockchain Revolution (2016)

Why this pilot?

Only by experimenting, local government can experience what really works and what contributes to smarter or leaner processes. With this pilot we want to enhance transparancy and reducing errors occuring during the 'counting-the-votes' - process.
