The province and the safety region Zuid-Holland asked GovernEUR|Erasmus University Rotterdam to study the contribution of civil society to disaster management before, during and after floods.

The Alblasserwaard-Vijfheerenlanden is a vulnerable area in the southwest of the Netherlands. Governments experience the limits of their evacuation and disaster management plans, because of the low surface, the many rivers and the many people living in this area. Therefore, the province and the safety region Zuid-Holland asked GovernEUR|Erasmus University Rotterdam to study the contribution of civil society to disaster management before, during and after floods. In this study, the social network of the area is analyzed as well as the resources available in the area. The aim of the study is to come to plans, arrangements and tools which foster synergy between societal and governmental contributions to disaster management in case of flooding. Autumn 2019, the results will be presented.
