Swedish flood data maps

02 June 2017 - Published by Eric Boessenkool
Almost every year Sweden is affected by floods that cause damage. These can be limited through prevention planning and effective response operations during floods. For this purpose, the MSB, Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, compiles and maintains general flood inundation maps.

MSB, Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, is responsible for issues concerning civil protection, public safety, emergency management and civil defense. The responsibility extends to measures taken before, during and after an emergency or crisis.

The flood inundation maps are created to be used as basic data for prevention work by modelling the areas at risk, i.e. the areas close to watercourses. The maps are also intended for use during the planning of emergency services work and as a foundation for land use planning by municipalities. They can also be used as basic data for various risk and vulnerability analyses. This watercourse model can also be used during the emergency stage of a flood to calculate probable water levels and the development of water discharges during the flood.

In the attached link you find the geographic flood data maps that the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency use to support municipalities and county boards in their planning work. The text is in Swedish; but may be of interest anyway.
