Plaques and billboards

Q: Must all projects put up a billboard and plaque?

A: No, the rule applies to projects, which finance infrastruture and construction sites with a total public contribution of more than 500,000 EUR. Please refer to fact sheet 25 on publicity requirements for further details.

Q: When do I put up a billboard - and when do I put up a plaque?

A: While works are ongoing, projects must put up a temporary billboard visible to the public. The billboard should be replaced by a permament plaque no later than 3 months after completion of the works.

Q: Are  projects required to use the plaque template provided?

A: No, projects are free to create their own designs. We do however recommend using the one provided by the programme (available in our Downloads section) as it lives up to the technical requirements of the European Commission.

If you choose to develop your own design, be aware that it must include:

  • The project name
  • The main objective of your project
  • The flag of the European Union
  • Reference to the European Union
  • Reference to the European Regional Development Fund

These elements must take up at least 25% of the plaque.

Q: Where can I find the formal requirements for billboards and plaques?

A: Fact sheet 25 on publicity requirements sums up the requirements, but if you want to find the original specifications as laid out by the European Commission, they can be found in Art. 5 Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 821/2014.
