The new bridge of Ritsumasyl has replaced the previous bridge, to make the road for the ships more safe and comfortable, because of the width of 17 meters. The bridge is movable when there is a ship that has to pass. It is unique in its way because it is the biggest bridge that is made like this.

With 200 censors, the bridge is controllable, to see if everything runs well. There are still some tests running and there is research going on, to see what consequences this bridge has. The first results are better than expected so this is promising for the future.

The client of this bridge is the Province of Fryslân. There is a big variety package of organizations that has worked together to complete this bridge. NHL Stenden University, Windesheim, Hochschule Osnabrück, TU Delft, Delft Infra Composits, Witteveen + Bos, Sweco, Jansen Venenboer, REEF Infra and Antea Group worked together to make this unique project work.

The bridge is made of biobased composite. The renewed raw materials that has been used are flax and resin. Those two materials are the basis of the bridge. The bridge is made out of 80% of natural material, based on flax.

For now, this new bridge is made for cycling and walking, but a chance of making one for cars too can be a project for in the future. For now, the bridge of Ritsumasyl is something where the Province of Fryslân can be proud of.
