In the last years at the KU Leuven Public Governance Institute, Cesar Casiano and his colleagues have studied the role of the different government levels in developing blue-green infrastructure that can help small and medium-size cities to reduce flood risks.

Their paper “Governance assessment of a blue-green infrastructure project in a small size city in Belgium - The potential of Stad Herentals for a leapfrog to water sensitive” has been published recently.

Authors: Cesar Casiano, Vera Vikolainen Joep Crompvoets.

This article has been inspired by the work of Gül Özerol, Kris Lulofs, Helge Bormann Mike Böge, and Nanco Dolman who are part of the Interreg North Sea Region Programme project #CATCH. The research undertaken for this article was funded through the KU Leuven postdoctoral mandate (PDM) and the article is open access.
We wish the people affected by the current floods a good recovery. Tragedies like this strengthen our commitment to continue conducting research that can contribute to the climate change adaptation of cities and the well-being of their inhabitants.
