The CATCH decision support tool

Midsize cities in the North Sea Region face challenges towards climate change and extreme weather. But how do you get more insight in how your city is doing and how can you find possible solutions for climate change? Or how can you develop a strategy for the future? Interreg NSR project CATCH has developed the CATCH decision support tool to help midsize cities with guidance, insight and solutions into a suitable climate adaptation strategy. It gives the cities insight in their current situation, where to focus on and possible solutions. This helps to create a workable climate change adaptation strategy that fits the cities’ needs.

How does the tool work?

We have developed a set of decision support tools and good practice examples that will support midsize cities to determine long term climate adaptation strategies. The main idea is that cities enter a cycle for continuous improvement in climate change adaptation. This way they can improve consistently but still follow the path that fits their situation. The tool has two main steps.

  1. First of all, the tool helps you to determine your starting position. With a self-assessment you test your cities’ position towards climate change adaptation. You learn about your strengths and weaknesses. With a self-assessment you create more insight in the current situation of your city and where to focus on for solutions.
  2. The second step, the climate adaptation cycle, is a tool for continuous improvement, that helps to structure the cities’ steps in order to develop a workable climate change adaptation strategy. This cycle helps you to make and execute a climate change adaptation strategy that fits your situation. In this cycle, there are two supportive tools as well. When you are ready, you evaluate. To do this, you can use the self-assessment again. This ensures continuous improvement. You can do this cycle until you reach the ideal climate adaptive city state: the water sensitive city.

In the roadmap below you can see how the different tools relate.
