His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands have visited the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW).

This visit was a part of their working visit to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. They were accompanied by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and a high-ranking German-Dutch delegation.

The visit celebrated the German-Dutch colloquium "North Sea meets Baltic Sea" at the IOW with about 50 invited scientists. German and Dutch researchers reported to the royal couple on their cooperation on the subjects climate change, sea-level rise, coastal protection, pollutants and microplastics in the sea and sign a letter of intent for future cooperation. At this meeting the banners from the Interreg NSR IV projects were displayed.
