First sneak peek into BITS cycling survey

05 June 2020 - Published by Matteo Candelari

In view of the evaluation of the BITS project, we recently launched our BITS survey among the inhabitants of the participating cities and regions. This survey provides insight into people’s cycling behaviour, as well as in their perceived motivations and barriers for cycling. Ready to catch a glimpse of our preliminary results?

Cycling is fun. Let's start on a positive note: the BITS survey reveals that we all like to bike! Cycling gets our heart pumping and our legs spinning. More than 80% of the respondents indicate that they love to cycle. There are many reasons why we should get on our bike and make the most of being on two wheels. The survey shows that there is a lot more to it than just getting from one place to another.

Cycling is good for our health. There are many ways people’s lives are enriched by hopping on a bike: over 80% of the respondents indicate that cycling helps them to stay physically and mentally healthy. Even 60% suggest that cycling is a wonderful remedy to help them reduce stress. The fact that cycling is good for our health is for 65% of the respondents a key reason for cycling even more.

Cycling is good for the environment. Next to the health benefits, we are well aware of the environmental benefits of cycling. More than 92% of the respondents is convinced that cycling can play an important role in protecting our environment. Nearly 90% indicate that cycling helps to reduce CO2 emissions and 84% mark that cycling can help to combat climate change.

Cycling is innovating. To boost our cycling behaviour, we are strongly interested in the benefits that digital applications can offer us for cycling. Particularly, we are looking forward to the arrival of LED lights on bicycle paths that signal when there is a risk of slipping, or technologies that prevent theft of our beloved bicycle. In addition, we are interested in apps that inform us about our health while cycling and, for example, tell whether we have already burned that irresistible snack. Finally, we are excited about apps offering us the most scenic route to our destination. With respect to the latter, it doesn't seem like we'll be able to get on a plane towards our favourite travel destination soon. Have you already thought about your bicycle to discover the world?
