As reported by ITS International, the county of Bedfordshire in England is experimenting a warning-sign system in order to alert drivers to a cyclist ahead. The system was put in place by Swarco Traffic.

The limited visibility on the roads of Bedfordshire was a concern for many cyclists. Thanks to Swarco’s scheme it’s possible to detect a cyclist in the lanes and alert motorists to their presence. This means an improved protection for cyclists that are now safer to cycle on the rural roads of Bedfordshire.

Swarco’s tool relies on vehicle-activated signs that warn about the presence of cyclist in a defined detection zone (around 750m in length). When a cyclist is passing through that zone, the signs illuminate to warn approaching drivers to slow down.
