Addressing climate change in the North Sea Region

21 November 2017 - Published by Anne Sofie Forfang
Seventeen North Sea Region projects are currently working to help mitigate climate change or adapt to its regional impacts.

The COP23 Climate Summit held last week once again underlined the need for effective action for the world to steer clear of future worst-case climate scenarios.

With its many low-lying areas, the North Sea Region may be facing tough challenges due to the predicted rise in seal levels and extreme weather events.

This is why the North Sea Region Programme is helping to address climate change, both in terms of adapting to its consequences and in terms of reducing human impact by transitioning to green energy systems.

Cost-effective and scalable solutions

Of our 39 on-going projects, seven are exploring ways that the region can adapt to climate change. Bolstering flood defense infrastructure, using nature's own forces in designing climate-smart city layouts, and

Ten other projects seek to foster green energy approaches, e.g. in regional transport, greenhouses, schools, and ports. Eight additional projects cover aspects of green energy promotion though not as their primary theme.

A common feature of all these projects is the fact that they are uniting specialists from several countries, who work together to address specific challenges arising from climate change.

Cost-effectiveness and scalability of solutions are core aspects of these efforts. This type of approach appears crucial considering the complexity of the overall challenge.
