German Energizers are ecstatic for their national 2IMPREZS Finale 2019!
To wrap up the 2018-2019 2IMPREZS campaign in Lower Saxony, the European Institute for Innovation (EIfI) just held the national German 2IMPREZS Finale.
The three pilot schools for the 2IMPREZS project — Grundschule Eversen, IGS Achim and Halepaghen-Schule Buxtehude —convened in the large auditorium of the IGS Achim to celebrate their successes during the 2018-2019 2IMPREZS energy-saving campaign, which was initially launched at the Rotenburg Rathaus (City Hall) back in February 2019.
As with the German 2IMPREZS kick-off event, the 3N Kompetenzzentrum of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) was in attendance to provide hands-on activities and trainings in the wonderful world of energy.
The EIfI and IGS Achim kicked off the three-hour event with a warm welcome and thank you to all the hard-working teachers and Energizers.
Sebastian Martin (EIfI) and Kerstin Albes-Bielenberg, the school rector of the IGS Achim, opened the event with welcoming remarks and a big thank you to all the teachers and pupils who participated in the 2IMPREZS German pilot project this year.
Immediately following the opening remarks, the excited pupils from each school held their creative presentations—ranging from choreographed dance to well-organised poster boards—to explain all they have done in their schools to save energy throughout the campaign, plus any challenges to learn from in the future. After the lunch break, the winners of the challenges were announced. And the winner is….
The Energizers, ranging from 5 to 15 years old, line up to receive their shiny new 2IMPREZS Energy Challenges 2019 trophies.
Well, in fact, there were technically three winners of the 2IMPREZS German campaign, with IGS Achim (comprehensive school) taking home the grand prize and the Grundschule Eversen (primary school) and Halepaghen-Schule Buxtehude (UNESCO secondary school) winning two separate ‘’second’’ place prizes. This year’s German pilot schools were all exceptionally impressive in brainstorming effective energy-saving techniques and initiatives, and the EIfI is excited to see what sort of initiatives they come up with in the following year.
Following the award ceremony, the pupils broke off into different exciting workshops, including: crafting ‘’Energy Eaters’’ to mark energy-consuming devices at home, effectively bringing the Energy Challenges into the home as well as the school; ‘’Energy Parkour’’ to explore the body’s use of kinetic energy; poster painting to raise awareness of climate change and ways to mitigate it; the 3N Kompetenzzentrum’s ‘’Balloon Bike’’, on which the pupils could blow up balloons by pedalling a bike; 3N’s solar-powered mini car races; and of course, the ‘’Energieköffer’’ (‘’Energy Suitcases’’) to explore how various devices consume various amounts of energy.
The German 2IMPREZS Energizers gathered around the Energy Eater workshop, led by Madeline Langlois (EIfI), to craft their own little creatures to release in their homes and mark energy-consuming devices.
The Energizers were almost a bit too enthusiastic when testing out the balloon bike supplied by the 3N Kompentenzzentrum, which blew up balloons using the energy generated by peddling the bike…POP!

After the hands-on aspect of the fun-filled finale came to a close, the visiting pupils gathered their Energy Eaters and hopped onto their buses for home. It was a very energetic day focused on the ever-increasing importance of lowering energy consumption and thus carbon emissions throughout the North Sea Region and beyond. A special thank you to our hosting school, IGS Achim, and the Klimaschutz- und Energieagentur Niedersachsen (Climate Protection and Energy Agency of Lower Saxony) and 3N Kompetenzzentrum for the wonderful support and gute Zusammenarbeit.
Students raced tiny solar-powered cars, powered by UV rays which were generated by turning a hand crank!
The Energizers painted two separate posters advocating for immediately climate action to be taken now.
